Economic, social implications of sustainable development discussed

Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) College, Ladowali Road, organised a national seminar titled “Appraisal of Sustainable Development Goals on North-Western India: Navigating Opportunities and Challenges for a Greener Future.” The event, held under the patronage of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), brought together academicians, researchers and policymakers to assess the region’s progress toward achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The seminar was inaugurated by chief guest Dr Usha Kapoor, former principal of GNDU College, who emphasised the pivotal role of women’s empowerment in fostering sustainable development.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr Bhoop Singh Gaur, Head of the Sociology Department at Dronacharya Government College, Gurugram, highlighted the economic and social implications of sustainable development. He called for a coordinated effort between the Central and state governments to ensure effective implementation of the SDGs. He also stressed the importance of greater societal participation in advancing sustainability initiatives across Indian states and Union Territories.

Guest of honour Dr Jagsir Singh, Principal of Bebe Nanaki Government College, reinforced the necessity of collective action to drive sustainable progress. The event also saw the presence of Rupam Jagota, Associate Dean of GNDU Regional Campus, and Prof Kamlesh Singh Duggal, OSD of GNDU College, who delivered the welcome address, emphasising the importance of grassroots-level discussions on sustainability.

The seminar featured four technical sessions — two offline and two online — where nearly 100 academicians and researchers presented their findings. These sessions were chaired by renowned scholars, including Dr JK Gulati, former Head of the Management Department, GNDU College; Dr Ejaz Ahmed, Assistant Professor, GNDU’s Agriculture Department; Dr Varinder Singh Walia, Editor of Punjabi Jagran; and Dr Neha Nagar, Assistant Professor at Noida University.

During the concluding session, Dr Varinder Singh Walia emphasised the media’s role in promoting sustainable development, urging journalists to adopt responsible reporting practices to raise awareness and encourage public participation in sustainability efforts.

“The seminar provided a vital platform for insightful discussions, research presentations and policy recommendations,” said Dr Duggal.
