Foam spill near STP causes disruption on 66 Feet Road in Jalandhar

A large accumulation of thick white foam, resembling snow near 66 Feet Road, close to the sewage treatment plant (STP), had caused inconvenience to commuters and concern among residents. The foam spilled onto the road, obstructing visibility and making navigation difficult for vehicles on both sides.

The unusual sight prompted public curiosity and concern regarding the nature of the substance. Municipal Corporation (MC) officials attributed the foam formation to a sudden drop in temperature. “When treated sewage is released into a cooler environment, the warm effluent can lead to foam formation,” explained one official.

Another MC official added that the microbial culture used in the STP functions optimally at around 34°C. The recent sharp decline in temperature disrupted this balance, resulting in excessive foaming. The overflow occurred due to an opening in the connection between the outlet and the sewer line.

Deputy Mayor and area councillor Malkit Singh acknowledged the incident and confirmed that prompt action was taken. “The foam has been cleared and necessary steps have been initiated to prevent recurrence,” he said.

Although the situation has been resolved, residents are urging the authorities to implement preventive measures to avoid similar incidents, especially during changing weather conditions.
