The Jalandhar Police Commissionerate claimed to have busted a four-member gang involved in extorting money from people by posing as government officers.

Suspects impersonated MC officials

Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said the complainant had alleged that the suspects posed themselves as field officers of the Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar, and visited his under-construction house. Sharma said these imposters told Chatar Singh that there was no approval for construction of the building. They also threatened to demolish the building.

Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said Chatar Singh, a resident of Dhilwan village, had filed a complaint against Sunny Mahindru, Ajay Kumar, Mishti and Manpreet Singh alleging extortion.

He said the complainant had alleged that the suspects posed themselves as field officers of the Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar, and visited his under-construction house. Sharma said these imposters told Chatar Singh that there was no approval for construction of the building. They also threatened to demolish the building.

said they demanded Rs 10,000 from the building owner. After initial payment of Rs 5,000, the building owner got sceptical about the conduct of imposters following which he called the police.

The police arrested four gang members identified as Manpreet Singh of Avtar Nagar, Sunny Mahindru of New Baldev Nagar, Kishanpura, Ajay Kumar of Chota Ali Mohalla and Mishti of Model House and recovered the extorted money from them.

The Police Commissioner said a case under Sections 384, 419, 420 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the suspects at the Rama Mandi police station. The gang had a history of impersonating various departmental employees.
