Garhshankar closed for half day in protest

Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsIn protest against the inclusion of Garhshankar in the proposed Sri Anandpur Sahib district, the Bar Associations of Garhshankar, various political parties, and the chamber of commerce held a protest march from the Court Complex to Sri Anandpur Sahib Road, raising slogans such as “Stop dividing Garhshankar,” “Long live public unity,” and “Down with the Punjab Government.” During the protest, the call for a half-day market closure in Garhshankar received support, and most shops remained closed.
During the protest, various speakers expressed their views, stating that its inclusion in Sri Anandpur Sahib to the district would cause inconvenience to the people. They stated that Garhshankar is culturally and geographically connected to Hoshiarpur district. Therefore, the people will not be forcibly allowed to be merged with the proposed district.
Comrade Darshan Singh Mattoo, Congress constituency in-charge Amanpreet Singh Lali, Congress leader Jasvir Singh Purkhowal, BJP constituency in-charge Nimisha Mehta, Congress leader Sarita Sharma, Kulwinder Bittu, Youth Congress leader Pranav Kirpal, CPM's Gurnek Bhajjal, Mahinder Kumar Badhoyan and Subhash Mattoo, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Ikwal Singh Kheda and Harpreet Singh Bedi, former Bar Association president Pankaj Kirpal and Bar Association president Raj Kumar Bhatti were among those who participated in the protest.
