Union leaders say although the Punjab Government talks about an “education revolution”, thousands of teachers in the state are struggling without timely pay. Speaking to mediapersons, Government Aided Teachers and Employees’ Union’s district president Monica Sharma and secretary Balwinder Kaur said the Education Department was blocking salary grants by issuing unnecessary letters. In many districts, salaries had not been released since March 2025, while in some cases since January 2025, and in a few schools, even the grant for 2024 was still pending, they said. Retired teachers are also facing hardship as their PPO pension orders have not been issued for months, and the union leaders allege that these orders are being released only through personal deals instead of in order of file submission dates.
State president Gurmeet Singh Madanpuri from Ludhiana announced that the union would hold a protest and gherao the DPI office on August 12, demanding the immediate release of salary grants and PPO orders.
He warned that if the problem was not resolved, the union would take stronger action and hold the Punjab Government responsible.
The leaders appealed to Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to hold a panel meeting with the union and find a quick solution.
