The initiative aims to protect citizens from extreme heat conditions worsened by climate change.
Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain, who spearheaded the effort, commended the collaborative work of Assistant Commissioner Oishee Mandal and Red Cross Society Secretary Mangesh Sood, whose team submitted the successful proposal to the Punjab Department of Revenue, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management. Jain described the project as a crucial step towards building climate-resilient, people-centric infrastructure in the district.
The “Heatwave Mitigation Plan” will involve the establishment of cooling centres, shaded waiting areas and mobile water distribution units in both urban and rural areas. These facilities will be set up in high-footfall zones such as bus stands and government buildings, offering respite through fans, coolers and air conditioners. Additionally, public water kiosks and ORS supply centres will ensure access to safe drinking water during heatwaves.
Emergency medical facilities will be strengthened by providing hydration kits, essential medicines and additional hospital beds. Public awareness campaigns on heatwave safety and emergency relief funds for heat-related crises will also support community resilience.
DC Jain emphasised that the project will serve as a benchmark for other districts in Punjab and is expected to be fully implemented before the next summer season, ensuring timely relief and enhanced climate preparedness for Hoshiarpur.
