Until July this year, Doaba region’s Kapurthala was leading the dengue tally, but now Hoshiarpur has taken the lead. However, even as the region is in the most vulnerable phase of the dengue season in the peak of the autumn months, Jalandhar has continued to stay at a safe third spot in Doaba in terms of dengue cases.

Across Doaba, with 129 cases, Hoshiarpur leads in cases count, Kapurthala follows with 81 cases, Jalandhar retains third post with 77 cases and Nawanshahr has so far reported 31 cases of dengue.

In 2016 and 2021, Jalandhar had seen over 400 cases a year. But in the past two years, less than 200 cases of dengue (per year) have been reported in Jalandhar. The pattern seems to be repeating this year — even after the autumn spike.

Meanwhile, Hoishiarpur has topped the dengue tally in Doaba for the second consecutive year. Last year too, Hoshiarpur led in dengue cases. In Jalandhar, as many as 176 dengue cases were reported in 2023 (112 urban, 64 rural) and 131 in 2024 (92 urban, 39 rural).

Of the 77 cases tested positive so far in Jalandhar, 43 have been reported in urban areas and 34 in rural. This year so far, over 5 lakh homes (5,38,772) have been surveyed for dengue — over 2 lakh (2,11,031) households in rural areas and 3 lakh (3,27,681) in urban areas.

Of these, dengue larvae were found in 1,589 houses (1,205 urban and 386 rural).

A total of 3,861 dengue samples (of which 198 were from other districts) have been checked this year so far. Meanwhile, a total of two dengue challans have been issued in Jalandhar, both rural. As many as 42 pre-challan notices have been issued in the city.

The Health Department has deputed as many as 45 teams (15 urban and 30 rural) for dengue field checks on a daily basis.

As many as 1,790 health workers are carrying out sampling and larvae surveys in the district daily. Of these 1,790 staff, 188 comprise multipurpose health workers (96 female and 92 male), 55 multi-purpose health supervisors, a network of 1,487 ASHA workers and 60 breeding checkers (22 urban and 38 rural). Over 4,000 nursing students have also pitched in.

The Friday dry day drives in Jalandhar have been carried out across schools and colleges as well as homes and offices. Teachers too have been roped in to spread awareness on dengue and steps to be taken for its prevention.
