The EC's electoral roll does have this unique house number in the posh Defence Colony falling in the Jalandhar Cantonment Assembly segment. There are seven voters enrolled at this unheard of and non-existent address.
Angad Dutta, secretary, Punjab Youth Congress, said he laid hands on this major discrepancy while verifying the voter list as per the directions of the high command. "I chose to start with my own colony. I reside in Defence Colony. I was shocked to see that H.No. 0 existed on the official records of our colony. At the outset, I thought that there could have been a mistake in putting the house number. But when I delved deeper, I realised that no one with seven names mentioned against this house resided in our colony", he said.
Dutta said, “Defence Colony is a well-established colony since decades. I also enquired it with my neighbours, and no one has ever heard of such a house. This is clear evidence of fake entries being added to the voter list. Such manipulation is nothing less than an attack on our democratic rights".
Showing a copy of the voter list downloaded from the ECI portal, Dutta also gave out the names of those listed as voters at H.No. 7. The list had the names of Iqbal Singh (60, male), Ajit Kumar Yadav (53, male), Amarjit Singh (52, male), Meena Yadav (51, female), Nirmal Singh (50, male), Umesh Tiwari (37, male) and Rohit Lugun (51, male) as the registered voters on the given address. Even more unbelievable was that all of them seemed unrelated and that Ajit Kumar Yadav is mentioned as the son of Dalip Singh.
The PYC secretary said the verification of voter lists had been initiated on the directions of national in-charge Krishna Allavaru, National Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib, and national general secretary and Punjab in-charge Dr Smruti Ranjan Lenka.
He further appealed to all Youth Congress leaders and the youth of Punjab to carefully verify voter lists in their respective areas. Any discrepancies or fake entries, he emphasised, should be reported on votechoriroko.in — a platform launched by Rahul Gandhi to fight against voter fraud.
The Punjab Youth Congress has also planned awareness drives, signature campaigns, and protests to highlight the issue of electoral manipulation and ensure that every genuine vote is protected. “Together, we must expose vote theft and protect democracy. It is our responsibility to safeguard the rights of every citizen,” Dutta added.
