In bid to escape, 7 girls attack guard of observation home

The Jalandhar police have booked seven minor girls who tried to escape from Gandhi Vanita Ashram Observation Home in the wee hours of Thursday.

In a bid to escape from the observation home, the girls attacked Amrit Kaur, a homeguard, on her head.

Despite suffering grievous injuries, the homeguard somehow succeeded in stopping the girls from escaping. She is currently undergoing treatment at the Jalandhar Civil Hospital.

At present, all girls are facing trials in different cases. The police said three of the seven girls face murder charge, two each have been booked under the NDPS Act and theft charges.

In March 2021, a total of 45 girls had escaped from the Gandhi Vanita Ashram. However, they were traced on the same day. According to information, the girls used an iron rod, sourced from the premises, to make a hole in the wall on the first floor of the observation home.

After the homeguard got wind of their plan and raised alarm, the girls reportedly attacked her with a bathroom floor tile. In the melee, the homeguard suffered head injury, which required 14 stitches. Division 2 SHO Gurpreet Singh said, “The minor girls tried to escape in the wee hours of Thursday. An FIR has been registered against them. The matter is under investigation.”

District Child Protection Officer Ajay Bharti said, “The escape was planned on the same night. A report has been sent to the higher authorities. At present, the girls are at the observation home.”

An FIR has been registered against seven girls under Sections 109, 132, 115(2), 221 and 61(2) of the BNS at the Division 2 police station, Jalandhar.
