Since International Women’s Day falls on Sunday this year, most of the educational institutes and social organisations celebrated the day today.

Though the district administration had cancelled the celebrations in the wake of coronavirus threat and advisory from the state Health Department against holding gatherings, private institutions went ahead with their celebrations.

Kanya Maha Vidyalaya

An open house on ‘Women empowerment’ was held at Kanya Maha Vidyalaya where students shared their views, thoughts and experiences on the topic. An open house was organised by the department of student welfare. Principal Prof Atima Sharma Dwivedi inspired the students to take research projects on various women issues. She emphasised the need for physical and mental strength for women to face the challenges of life. A book review competition and a group discussion on the topic was also organised.

Apeejay College of Fine Arts

International Women’s Day was celebrated with enthusiasm at Apeejay College of Fine Arts. Principal Dr Sucharita Sharma said the position of women in the contemporary society was exuberant where she was not only rocking at her work place but also balancing her various roles back at home as well.

She added, “It is the need of hour that the empowered women should take the lead and become the voice for voiceless breaking all barriers. At every level in the society, be it economic, political or social, today we see women doing their best.” A skit ‘Parvaaz’ was enacted. The skit talked about the women, her circumstances, the pressures sometimes she faced due to the society and the decisions she makes.

GNDU Ladhewali campus

Guru Nanak Dev University Regional Campus at Ladhewali here organised a panel discussion in the context of International Women’s Day. The participants were Sarita Tiwari, an actor, academician and writer, Poonam Lagah from All India Radio and Harleen Kaur, advocate. The issue was ‘Women’s rights and their status today’. Sarita Tiwari urged the women to be strong, especially in emergency situations. Harleen Kaur spoke about the legal rights of women. She said women too should not misuse these laws which were being done nowadays. Poonam expressed her views about the discrimination that women had to face and that they should try to assert themselves.

Hindu Kanya College

Today on the occasion of International Women Day, Monika Lamba, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kapurthala, addressed students of Hindu Kanya College, Kapurthala, where other women from different departments, including Navneet Kaur Bal, Estate Officer PUDA, Dr Simrat Kaur, ASP Bholath, Sarvjit Kaur, music and drama award winner, Anjana Joshi Director NFCI, Dr Jashanbir Aulakh and Harsimran Kaur, international basketball player were there. Students were motivated how they had to focus on their goals and to be determined to achieve the same. The students were also told that in case, they were aspirant of the judicial services, then they were always welcome to District Court Complex and in the office of District Legal Services Authority Kapurthala, where appropriate guidelines would be given to the children and students. The students were made aware of the rights of the women and laws pertaining to their protection.

Lyallpur Khalsa College

On the eve of the International Women’s Day, the English Literary Society of the PG Department of English organised a programme, ‘Kurhi Nu Nach Lain De’, at Lyallpur Khalsa College. College principal Dr Gurpinder Singh Samra graced the occasion as the chief guest. Various colourful and vibrant stage performances were given by the female contingent of the non-teaching staff members of the college. The programme also saw the enactment of a short skit, giddha and modelling by the non-teaching staff members.

Innocent Hearts College of Education

“A successful woman is one who can build a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at her.” Along with millions of people around the globe, Innocent Hearts College of Education, Jalandhar and NSS Unit of the college celebrated International Women’s Day. Aradhana Bowry, Executive Director of College, was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr Tirath Singh accented the importance of the day by saying that the celebration was being done only because no other species possess such plethora of attributes. Various events like skit, PowerPoint presentation, slogan writing and women empowerment were performed on the occasion.
