The deceased has been identified as Gurvinder Singh, son of Harjinder Singh.
According to sources, Gurvinder’s health deteriorated suddenly in the night. Jail staff immediately rushed him to the Civil Hospital, Kapurthala, where doctors began treatment. However, despite their best efforts, he could not be saved and died around 1.30 am.
Dr Ashish Pal Singh, who was on emergency duty in the hospital, told mediapersons that Gurvinder Singh succumbed during treatment. “The exact cause of death will only be known after the post-mortem report is released,” he said.
On receiving information, the Kapurthala police arrived at the hospital, took custody of the body, and sent it for a post-mortem. The inmate’s family has been informed about the incident. — OC
