Jalandhar, April 11

Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa today alleged that the state government had deliberately chosen to send VB summons to former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi to scuttle the plans of the Congress to rope him in for the Jalandhar bypoll campaign.

Bajwa said the VB’s move was clearly timed with a specific design to dent the Congress’ strategy. “Channi could have been summoned earlier or even a month after the elections. What is the point issuing summons to him now when we were planning to bring him to Jalandhar so that he could accompany the candidate for the filing of nomination papers this week?” asked Bajwa. The nomination papers for the May 10 byelection can be submitted between April 13 to 20.

“Just as the Centre is misusing the CBI and ED against its rivals, the state government is using the VB to settle the scores. When the Central agencies arrested the AAP leaders, including Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain in Delhi, the party reacted sharply. But in Punjab, it is deploying the same tools and methodology against Congress leaders,” he maintained.
