In a significant administrative development, the government has appointed labour leader Jarnail Nangal as the new Chairman of the Improvement Trust, Phagwara. The announcement was made through an official notification issued by the Department of Local Government on Wednesday evening.

The appointment, made under the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of Section 4 of the Punjab Town Improvement Act, 1922, comes into immediate effect and will remain in force until further orders. This move also supersedes the earlier notification issued in September 2023.

Jarnail Nangal, a resident of village Nangal, Kapurthala, brings with him a strong grassroots connection and is expected to spearhead urban development initiatives in Phagwara, one of Punjab’s rapidly growing towns.

The official order was signed by Tejveer Singh, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Local Government.

The notification has been forwarded to key government offices, including the Chief Minister’s Office, the Minister of Local Government, the Chief Secretary and the Deputy Commissioner of Kapurthala. It will also be published in the extraordinary gazette of the government.

The appointment of Jarnail Nangal is being viewed as a strategic step to inject new energy into Phagwara’s urban planning and development landscape. Civic officials and local stakeholders have expressed optimism about the fresh leadership and its potential to accelerate infrastructure and public welfare projects in the city.
