Bhaskar, who also heads the Brahmin Sabha, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Civil Hospital, where doctors later declared his condition stable and out of danger.
Bhaskar stated that the assault occurred around 10 pm while he was returning home from the market. A speeding car passed dangerously close to him, prompting him to 'shout' at the driver. This led to a heated exchange, during which several youths in the car began hurling abuses. Moments later, they allegedly attacked him with iron rods. Bhaskar further claimed that after a phone call was made, two more individuals arrived on motorcycles and joined in the assault.
“I do not know the attackers,” Bhaskar told reporters from his hospital bed, adding that he had previously received death threats and even written to the Punjab DGP regarding the threats.
The police swiftly reached the scene following the incident. DSP (Sub-Division) Deepkaran Singh confirmed that two suspects, believed to be among the motorcycle-borne attackers, have been rounded up for questioning.
“The victim’s statement has been recorded and further investigation is underway,” said the City Police Station SHO.
The incident has sparked concern in Kapurthala, particularly within Hindu organisations, as it follows earlier reports of threats made against Bhaskar. The authorities have assured that appropriate legal action will be taken against the accused.
