According to CIA in-charge Jarnail Singh, the arrest was made near the government school in Talwandi Mahima village, where a police team led by ASI Gurdev Singh was conducting patrol duty. Acting on a tip-off, the police were informed that Kumar was on his way from the Kala Sanghian side, looking for a buyer to sell an illegal revolver.
