MC accused of violating court order
Condemning the Phagwara Municipal Corporation, Block Congress, Phagwara city president, Tarnjit Singh Banti Walia, accused the corporation of violating a High Court order. Walia highlighted that despite the corporation’s affidavit submitted in 2018, promising to remove waste dumping sites within the city, no action has been taken so far.
In a press statement, Walia recalled that in 2018, he filed a PIL plea in the High Court, urging the removal of a waste dumping site located near the National Highway Overbridge in the heart of Phagwara. The area, he said, is surrounded by residential, religious and commercial buildings, making the site a health hazard for local residents.
According to Walia, the High Court had issued notices to the Municipal Corporation and, in response, the corporation’s then official submitted an affidavit in which they assured the court of plans to collect waste from households and transport it to a designated dumping ground located 12 km outside the city. Additionally, it was mentioned that waste near the National Highway Overbridge would also be cleared. However, Walia said while the corporation complied with the order regarding the dumping site near the overbridge, no further action has been taken in other parts of the city.
Walia warned that if the corporation continues to ignore the High Court’s orders and fails to implement the waste collection plan, as promised, he would have no choice but to approach the court.
