With this year’s theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” setting the global tone, efforts are on to make Phagwara a plastic-free city. Spearheading the campaign with clarity and purpose, Dr Gupta has outlined a multi-pronged strategy that aligns with national and state mandates while emphasising local accountability and collective participation.
Central to the MC Commissioner’s directive is the strict enforcement of the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, as amended in 2021, and the latest guidelines issued by the Department of Local Government, Punjab. Effective immediately, the use of plastic carry bags with a thickness of less than 120 microns has been banned within municipal limits.
Additionally, all carry bags of permissible thickness must now display their micron measurement, shifting the burden of proof to manufacturers and vendors where markings are absent.
Recognising that enforcement alone is not enough, Dr Gupta has pushed for a comprehensive transition toward certified biodegradable and compostable alternatives, underscoring the importance of public education and behavioural change. A full ban on single-use plastic (SUP) items—those most often discarded irresponsibly—has also been enacted to prevent further strain on landfills and the city’s sanitation systems.
In a move that reflects both firmness and fairness, the Municipal Corporation, under her direction, has provided a grace period until June 30 allowing businesses and vendors to responsibly phase out existing stocks of banned plastic. Beginning July 1, dedicated enforcement teams will conduct inspections citywide, with no exemptions extended beyond the deadline.
“This World Environment Day, we renew our commitment to make Phagwara a plastic-free city. We call on all citizens and businesses to cooperate in this collective effort. Reducing plastic is not just about regulation—it’s about responsibility,” she said.
