According to SSP Gaurav Toora, the incident came to light when SHO City Usha Rani received a complaint from Baljit Kaur of Prempura, Phagwara.
She informed the police that her friend Tejvir Singh, alias Patwari, of Model Town, Phagwara, was arrested by the police on June 19.
Baljit Kaur stated that she had sought assistance from another acquaintance Mann Sharma to find out about Tejvir’s whereabouts.
Sharma allegedly claimed that he could secure Tejvir's release from police custody if she arranged ₹2 lakh.
Baljit Kaur arranged the amount from Dr Balbir Chauhan of Model Town and handed it over to Sharma.
However, once the money was received, Sharma reportedly stopped all communication with Kaur and even began threatening her with dire consequences if she pursued the matter further.
Investigation by the police revealed that Tejvir had been booked under the NDPS Act on June 19. The police registered a case against Mann Sharma, and a resident of Guru Nanakpura, Model Town.
SHO Usha Rani told this correspondent that the police arrested Sharma today and recovered Rs 25,000 from his possession.
