NSO marks 75 years of National Sample Survey with awareness drive in Kapurthala

To mark 75 years of the National Sample Survey’s contribution to evidence-based policymaking in India, the Regional Office of the National Statistics Office (NSO), Jalandhar, organised a public awareness campaign at the Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala, on Thursday.

A special booth was set up to commemorate the milestone and highlight the transforming role of the NSS in national planning and policy formulation.

Officials from the Regional Office distributed informative pamphlets showcasing the key surveys and ongoing activities undertaken by the NSS, under the theme “NSS – A glorious past to a promising future for a Viksit Bharat.”

Present at the occasion were Arun Kumar, Assistant Director; Umesh Kumar Limbu, Balram Singh, Manisha, Rahul Sharma (Senior Statistical Officers); and Survey Enumerators Balwinder Kaur, Sonika Attri, Ravinder, Chetan Kumar, and Satnam Singh.

The National Sample Survey (NSS) was established in 1950 under the then Ministry of Planning and is now functioning under the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation. The current celebration marks the 75-year journey of NSS, being observed from October 2024 to September 2025.

The first NSS round was conducted between October 1950 and March 1951, covering vital aspects of the Indian economy such as general particulars of households, agriculture and livestock, household industries, crafts and trade, services, financial operations, and household consumer expenditure.

Since its inception, the NSS has played a pivotal role in developing a robust socio-economic database through its extensive, countrywide sample surveys. These have provided critical inputs to both Central and State governments for developmental planning and policy decisions across sectors.
