They alleged that there were 4,716 posts of patwaris, but only 1,995 had been filled and the work against the vacant posts had been assigned to them for the last many years. They said they were working without any additional perks.

Harvir Singh Dhindsa, president, Revenue Patwar Union, said similar was the situation kanungos. “While there are 661 posts, only 500 have been filled. Work against the 161 vacant posts has been assigned to the existing staff,” he added.

Dhindsa said under-training patwaris working at Rs 5,000 per month for the last three years were the most exploited lot. Out of 1,227 patwaris who had joined in December 2016, more than 400 left their jobs as they felt being exploited physically and financially. — TNS
