Senior Akali Dal leader and Ward No. 9 Councillor Kamaljit Kaur has strongly refuted claims that she supported the Congress’ mayoral candidate in the Phagwara Municipal Corporation poll.

Addressing the media alongwith her husband, former councillor Kulwinder Singh Kinda, she termed the allegations as ‘false and baseless’.

She said she was a committed Akali and could never consider backing the Congress candidate. “The Congress is responsible for the 1984 attack on Darbar Sahib and for orchestrating fake encounters that led to the killing of innocent Sikh youngsters. Our family has always been dedicated to the Akali Dal and the Sikh Panth,” said Kamaljit.

Kinda said their ward primarily consisted of voters who had faith in the Sikh Panth and support SAD. “Supporting the Congress would mean betraying both our faith and our voters, which we can never do,” he said.

The controversy arose after senior Congress leader Sanjeev Bugga alleged that Kamaljit had shown support for the party’s mayoral candidate during a meeting of newly elected councillors.

Reacting sharply, Kinda accused the Congress leaders of spreading propaganda due to their frustration over failing to secure the mayoral position.

“Sanjeev Bugga and other Congress leaders have lost their mental balance after failing to get their candidate elected. Now, they are resorting to baseless allegations to save their political image,” added Kinda.
