Phagwara Mayor Ram Paul Uppal takes charge
Newly elected Phagwara Municipal Corporation (MC) Mayor Ram Paul Uppal, along with Senior Deputy Mayor Tej Paul Basra and Deputy Mayor Vikki Sood, took charge in the presence of Lok Sabha MP Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal, AAP halka in-charge Joginder Singh Maan and senior leader Pawan Sharma Pappi at the civic body office here on Saturday morning.
Municipal Corporation Commissioner Navneet Kaur Bal and Phagwara Superintendent of Police (SP) Rupinder Kaur Bhatti were also present on the occasion.
Uppal won the MC election from Ward No. 18 on the Congress ticket, but later joined the AAP in the mayoral race. Taj Pal Basra won the MC election as the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate from Ward No. 14. Though the BSP had alliance with the Congress, during the mayoral election, Basra voted in support of AAP candidate Uppal and succeeded to get the post of Senior Deputy Mayor. Vikki Sood contested on the AAP ticket in Ward No. 16. The AAP gave two out of three prestigious posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor to councillors from other parties.
While talking to media after taking charge, Mayor Ram Pal Uppal said he would sincerely work for the overall development of the Phagwara MC leaving all political differences aside. Lok Sabha MP Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal congratulated the new MC team and AAP spokesperson Harnoor Singh Maan for successfully managing to form the Phagwara civic body House.
