Sarpanch Rajat Bhanot has publicly criticised the plan, arguing tha2t the 200 acres designated for urban development are highly fertile agricultural land and vital to the livelihoods of many farmers.
The project, initiated by the Jalandhar Development Authority, aims to transform the rural landscape into a residential estate. However, locals fear that such urbanisation would erode Punjab’s agricultural heritage and negatively impact the environment. “Punjab thrives on its villages. If we continue to urbanise fertile land, it will damage both our farming traditions and our natural surroundings,” Bhanot remarked.
Residents are urging the Punjab Government to reconsider the plan, highlighting concerns over air quality, cultural preservation and economic sustainability. “If farmland disappears, where will agriculture go?” questioned Bhanot, emphasising that this development could disrupt Punjab’s agrarian economy.
Village authorities and community members have vowed to resist the move, arguing that it compromises rural purity, environmental stability and traditional livelihoods. The opposition is growing, with calls for officials to engage in discussions to explore alternative solutions.
