Respecting women is respecting Mother Earth, says Seechewal

International Women’s Day was celebrated at Government Middle School, Seechewal, on Saturday, under the chairmanship of principal Damanjit Kaur and supervision of Gaurav Kumar.

The event, which has been held annually for the past 11 years, was inspired this year by Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal’s message: “Respecting women is respecting Mother Earth.” Seechewal presided over the function as chief guest.

District Education Officer Dr Gurinderjit Kaur was the special guest at the programme, where employees from various departments were honoured for their contribution. From the police department, Inspector Seema Rani, in charge of the women’s cell and senior lady constable Meeta Kumari were recognised. Those honoured also included Lakhwinder Kaur from the banking sector, Dr Ritika Bali and retired District Ayurvedic Officer Dr Surender Kalyan from the health department and several educationists such as lecturer Sita from the Punjabi department and principal Seema Chopra from Mithapur. Among the awardees were Child Development Supervisor Jaswinder Kaur and actor Nargis Nagar, known for “Chidiya

Da Chamba”.

Notably, the programme also acknowledged men who actively support women’s progress. Punjab Roadways conductor Baljinder Singh and Baba Jeevan Singh, president Kirtikant Kalyan, were among those honoured. Advocate Poonam Rani from the Justice Department was also felicitated.

The event featured a stage play, ‘Meri Udaan Meri Pehchaan’, written by Jaspreet Singh, which highlighted women’s challenges, with performances by Rajesh Kumar and Gaurav Kumar. A poem dedicated to mothers was also recited on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Gurinderjit Kaur emphasised the progress of women in society, noting their increasing presence in leadership roles.

The programme concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony, symbolising unity and celebration. Environmentalist Surjit Singh, Sarpanch Boota Singh, principal Jaspal Jeet Kaur and other dignitaries were present at the event.
