SDM orders strict action against stubble burning in Phagwara

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Phagwara, Jashanjit Singh, on Wednesday chaired a meeting with officials from multiple departments and the police to review measures to prevent stubble burning across the subdivision.

The meeting, held at the SDM office, was attended by the Tehsildar, BDPO representatives, Junior Engineers, officials from the Water Supply and Sanitation Department, the Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies and the Agriculture Officer.

The SDM directed officers to make extensive public announcements in villages to raise awareness among farmers about the environmental and health hazards of burning crop residue. He warned that violations would attract penalties — Rs 5,000 for up to two acres, Rs 10,000 for two to five acres, and Rs 30,000 for over five acres. Repeat offenders could face FIRs.

He urged the Agriculture Department and cooperative societies to support farmers with alternatives such as Happy Seeders, mulchers and balers. “Preventing stubble burning is not just a legal obligation but a moral duty to protect the environment,” he said.

Jashanjit Singh called upon panchayats, farmer unions and youth clubs to participate actively in awareness drives. He also directed police and revenue officials to maintain strict vigil and report any violations immediately.

Concluding the meeting, the SDM expressed confidence that efforts by departments and farmers would help make Phagwara an example of environmental responsibility.
