Seechewal calls for mass movement to make Punjab’s rivers pollution-free

Rajya Sabha member Balbir Singh Seechewal has called for a mass movement to make the state’s rivers free from pollution. Speaking during the celebrations of World Wetlands Day, Sant Avtar Singh Memorial College Foundation Day and the annual function at Sant Avtar Singh Memorial Senior Secondary School in Nirmal Kuteya Seechewal, the Rajya Sabha member emphasised the importance of the holy Budha Dariya as a symbol of Punjab’s rich heritage and an integral part of the nation. He reminded the audience the ancient water body had been graced by the feet of Guru Nanak Dev.

Seechewal said public participation is key to restoring the Budha Dariya.

He highlighted bathing ghats were being built along the river’s banks, but noted many believe these ghats should be constructed only after ensuring clean water flows through them. He said he was confident clean water would soon return to the river, reinforcing his belief the people of the state have a deep connection with the five rivers of the region.

However, he lamented the pollution of these sacred rivers, where poisonous and dirty water has killed aquatic life, turning life-giving waters into sources of death.

Seechewal appealed to all members of the Parliament from Punjab to unite and demand action to make the rivers of the state’s pollution-free during the ongoing budget session.

The MP also pointed out the Central Government’s failed promise to make the Sutlej River pollution-free. He stressed the urgent need for a collective voice in Parliament to safeguard the rivers and secure the future for generations.

Seechewal also referred to the Kanjli Wetland, located along the holy Kali Bein and the Harike Pattan Wetland, where the Sutlej and Beas rivers meet. He raised concerns over the Kahnawan Chhamb Lake, which is being turned into a garbage dump, a problem strongly opposed by local residents. Seechewal said he had visited the area and supported the efforts of the community to protect the wetland.
