The Lohian Khas police have booked seven villagers on the charge of intending to insult the religion of any class.

Investigating officer (IO) Prem Chand said the suspects were identified as Jagtar Singh, his brothers Parambir Singh and Gurmail Singh, Chandan Deep Singh, Harman Singh, Lovpreet Singh and Jaskaran Singh, all residents of Kakarr Kalan village.

Bhupindar Singh, a resident of Kakarr Kalan village, complained to the police that the village sarpanch’s husband called him on his cellphone on November 10 morning and asked him to attend a public meeting.

The complainant said when he reached the meeting spot, all suspects were present there. The complainant said the suspects asked questions about his caste, attacked him, pulled his hair after removing his turban and held his beard and dragged him. The complainant said the suspects insulted his religious sentiments as he was a baptized Sikh. The IO said a case under Sections 298 (injuring or defiling a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and 190 (unlawful assembly) of the BNS was registered against the suspects. — OC
