The police escorted the youths to their residences, where they were handed over to families in the early hours of Sunday.
When The Tribune correspondent visited the house of Pardeep Bassi in New Market Goraya on Sunday morning, the house was found locked. Social activist MP Singh Goraya informed The Tribune that Pardeep was residing with his widowed mother, Surinder Kaur, while his brother was settled in Canada. Pardeep had recently paid Rs 45 lakh to a travel agent to go to the USA but was nabbed near Mexico while crossing the border. Senior Superintendent of Police Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh stated that a team from Phillaur Police, led by DSP Sarwan Singh Bal, handed Pardeep over to his mother, Surinder Kaur, today.
SSP Khakh also mentioned that another deported youth, Amit Badhan, was brought from Amritsar Airport and handed over to his family at Bilga in Phillaur on Sunday morning.
In Phagwara, Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora reported that the Satnampura Police team, led by SHO Hardip Singh, brought youth Ankush Kailey from Amritsar Airport and reunited him with his family members in Kirpalpur village near Phagwara around 6:30 am today.
When this correspondent visited Ankush’s house, his father, Hans Raj, a labourer, refused to disclose any details about the procedure used to send his son abroad.
He mentioned that Ankush was not at home and had gone to Phagwara city to get medicine as he was unwell.
Hans Raj shared that a close relative arranged for Ankush’s travel to the US but did not reveal the amount spent. Phagwara Superintendent of Police Rupinder Bhatti is investigating the matter in detail.
