Nearly 200 persons, mostly women, belonging to various trade unions and the Samyukt Kisan Morcha today blocked vehicular traffic near bus stand, Kapurthala, by staging a dharna in the middle of the Kapurthala- Jalandhar road in support of their demands.

Buses belonging to Pepsu roadways did not ply on routes. An official of depot said out of a fleet of 90 buses only 20 to 25 buses plied in the morning on long routes. However, private buses plied as usual. Nationalised banks worked with 50 per cent staff as the All-India Bank Employees Association also went on strike.

Cash counters did not operate and customers have to return without depositing or withdrawal of cash. However, the strike was partial as it did not affect normal life.
