A clash between two students over a birthday party contribution left one dead and another critically injured at DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology (DAVIET) here at Kabir Nagar. The students reportedly fell off the second floor of the UG hostel’s C-block building while fighting.
The deceased has been identified as Krishan Kumar Yadav (23) and the injured as Aman Kumar (21). Both were residents of Bihar. As per information, the duo had an argument over a contribution made for their friend Sohan Kumar’s birthday party that was held in the hostel a few days back.
It was learnt that Aman had not paid his contribution for the birthday party and when Krishan went to his room last night to collect the money, the duo had a heated argument. After their argument escalated they both came to blows.
“During the fight, both fell off the second floor of the hostel building. Following which, other students, who were present at the spot, immediately rushed them to the nearby hospital,” said the police.
While Krishan was declared brought dead by the doctors, Aman was admitted to the ICU. He had suffered injuries on his head, back and legs.
He further said both were pursuing BSc and in the next one month their degree was about to complete. He said both come from a poor family, and in case of Aman, his studies are being sponsored by his uncle as his father couldn’t afford his education.
DCP (Investigation) Jaskiranjit Singh Teja said on the statement of the college’s watchman, a case under Section 304 of the IPC has been registered against Aman Kumar. He said police teams have procured CCTV footage of the hostel building in which the duo could be seen coming out of their room while fighting.
“Families of both the students have been informed and they will arrive by tomorrow. Further investigation in the case is underway as we are yet to take a statement from the student, who is under treatment,” he added.
Behavioural counselling must
Campus fights are increasing rapidly across the country. Majority of the students lose patience over small issues or even if their parents or teachers scold them. “Behavioural counselling and anger therapy sessions must be conducted on school and college campuses. Due to financial issues, love affairs, family issues, peer pressure, many youngsters are falling into depression. The worst part is, they don’t share their feelings, as a result of which, their behaviour towards others changes and they become violent easily,” said Priya Mehra, a mental health expert.
Previous cases of campus fights
- Just two weeks back, a girl student of CT Institute uploaded a post against the Muslim community supporting the remarks made by suspended BJP leaders Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal against Prophet Muhammad. Following which, the Kashmiri students on the campus lodged a protest and the police had to intervene to control the situation
- Six months ago, two groups of students from Bihar had clashed with each other over food in a hostel at DAVIET. The students reportedly thrashed each other with wooden and hockey sticks. Many students also sustained injuries during the scuffle. However, the matter was later resolved after police intervention
- Three MBBS students were critically injured in a brawl that took place on PIMS campus during daytime around seven months back. There were reports that some outsiders entered the campus and thrashed the students with iron rods leaving their hands, arms and legs fractured.
