An aged undertrial from Jalandhar, who was lodged at Modern Jail Kapurthala, died in the local Civil Hospital on Thursday night.

Victim Saiya Dass Anand (76) was in judicial custody for the past about 20 days in an alleged case of fraud lodged by the Jalandhar police. Jail Superientendent Shyamal Jyoti confirmed the death of undertrial in the local hospital during treatment.

The jail authorities said the inmate was hypertensive and faced breathing difficulty last evening after which he was checked up by the health staff in the jail. He was immediately referred to the hospital but could not survive.

His body was placed in a mortuary and post-mortem was conducted by a team of doctors under the supervision of a judicial magistrate.
