Upon confronting her family, Kulwinder alleged they initially promised to return the money but later backtracked and verbally abused Karanvir, leading him to emotional distress. He subsequently consumed a poisonous substance.

Following a complaint, Mahilpur police booked Navjot Kaur, her brother Prabhjot Singh, father Balwinder Singh, mother Rajwinder Kaur (all residents of Burj Raiya), along with Lakhwinder Singh and Baby (residents of Jahura, under Bhogpur police station), under relevant sections for abetment to suicide.
