Job profile of a statistician

Q. As I am very fond of maths, my teachers are suggesting that I pursue statistics in college. How much will I need to study to become a statistician? What will the work involve? I searched for jobs on the Internet and found nothing for “statistician.” Can you tell me something about getting into the prestigious Indian Statistical Institute? — Sarvesh Mohta

A.Your teachers may be right. Statistics is actually a branch of mathematics that deals with collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting masses of numerical data.

Statisticians typically study statistics, mathematics, and/or some related field of statistical application. The applied nature of many statistical professions, equips statisticians to develop skills in a particular field of study (economics, medicine, biology, psychology, agriculture, etc.)

While the extent of study that you’ll require will depend on the type and level of position you seek, most statisticians hold a master’s degree. Senior consulting or university faculty appointments usually require a doctorate.

However, many people with degrees in statistics don’t work with the specific designation “statistician.” Instead, they function as business analysts, economists, mathematicians, statistical software engineers, risk analysts, data scientists, quality analysts, actuaries, investigators, environmentalists, pharmaceutical engineers, and researchers who use statistics on a daily basis to perform the their respective job functions.

Try using key words such as “research” and “analysis” instead. Alternatively, you could also focus your search on the specific industry in which you are interested and see what jobs are listed.

For instance, Statistical Investigators Grade III are recruited by the Staff Selection Commission through a competitive exam for which the eligibility: is a Master’s degree in (Statistics / Maths / Economics). The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), offers BStat (H) at its main campus in Kolkata. The ISI Admission Test is on 10 May 2020

Performance in the written test & interview (perhaps even your past academic record) will be considered for final selection.

Eligibility: CL12 passed/equiv. with Math & English

Deadline: 08 March 2020

A stipend of Rs.3, 000 p.m. and a Contingency/books grant: Rs.3, 000 p.a.

Stipend is for 1 academic year only (can be renewed periodically upon student’s satisfactory progress).

What’s more, upon successful completion of B. Stat. (Hons.) you will be automatically admitted to the M. Stat. programme

No entrance exam for new DU course

Q.Is it true that DU will be admitting students to all its courses from this year?

A.Yes, there were speculations that DU would make entrance exams mandatory for all the courses at the UG level. The university, however, has put the doubts to rest, saying that the previous pattern will be followed for entrance-based admissions.

Following last year’s pattern, the Delhi University Entrance Test (DUET) will be conducted for admission to about 10 UG courses, including BA (Hons) Business Economics, Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), Bachelor of Business Administration (Financial Investment Analysis), BTech (IT & Mathematical Innovations), BA Hons (Humanities & Social Sciences), Bachelor of Elementary Education and the 5-year Integrated Programme in Journalism.

Although fraught with complexity, introducing a single form for admission in different courses is also under consideration.
