Director Neeraj Pandey is one of the key reasons. I have always admired his work. The other reason is the way it has been shot; it’s large and realistic. I wanted to be a part of a good web series and I am happy that my debut in web series happened with Special OPS.
Do you feel the growing popularity of web series is having an impact on the film industry?
In the long run, it could have some impact, but not now. Because all the entertainment one needs is in our phones now. You just need a strong internet connection. Something that amuses me is to what extent usage of smart phones have invaded our lives.
When did you realise that you want to become a filmmaker?
All of us pass through a phase when we ask ourselves what all have we achieved in our life? As an actor, I have earned a decent amount of fame and prosperity and then I started questioning myself about existence. That’s when I realised that I should be a story teller and can turn story into a good film.
Your debut film Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge has completed 25 golden years. What has been your fondest memory from the film?
Whenever and wherever I have gone, I have been always been known as Kuljeet from DDLJ. That’s a permanent stamp I have. When we were making this film we have never realised that it will create history. I think I am fortunate to be part of such an iconic film.
You have two young sons Aaryaman and Ayushman. Are they following your passion?
Both have studied acting in New York. Aaryaman the older one has already started giving auditions. Ayushman is assisting Karan Johar in Takht. As of now, I am not guiding them because I would like them to work on their own skills. I want them to establish their own identity. They should understand the value of struggle.
Are you satisfied with the way your career has progressed?
I have no regrets. I am thankful that I have come to a stage like this in life.
What is the essence of your long and blissful married life with Archana Puran Singh?
Archana had said one dialogue in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which says, “Pyar Dosti Hai” and we both believe in that phrase. That is the secret of our happy innings. When you are friends, you can overlook certain things. Friendship is the core element of our relationship. It makes us stronger.
