2,000 students to take part in I-Day function

As many as 2,000 students from various government and private schools are going to take part in the 78th Independence Day celebrations tomorrow. For the first time, students with special needs will be a part of the event as they will sing the National Anthem. Though rainfall is predicted in the morning hours, the forecast has failed to dampen the spirits of the students, who are all gripped by the patriotic fervour.

Around 500 students from GSSS, Cemetery road; 500 students from Government School, PAU; 500 students from Government Meritorious School and 250 students from GSSS, Gobind Nagar, are going to take part besides those from Spring Dale School, BVM School, DAV School, etc. Approximately 25 students from Vocational Rehabilitation Centre here will be singing the National Anthem and will be joined by the speech and hearing impaired students from Red Cross and Sarabha Nagar using sign language.

“They feel even if it rains, it would be a blessing from the heavens for the country to achieve greater heights. They are taking part in all the activities with profound enthusiasm,” Charanjit Kaur, principal, GSSS, Cemetery road, said.

Santosh Rani, a special students’ educator at a Sarabha Nagar school, who is training students in sign language, said that it was a privilege for all to perform at the Independence Day event.

Besides the march past, the students are going to take part in cultural performances including bhangra and giddha.

Punjab Cabinet Minister Balkar Singh will preside over the district-level Independence Day function to be held here at the PAU grounds. The students have been asked to arrive at 7.30 am. The flag hoisting will take place at 8.58 am.
