Blackout observed in Muslim-dominated areas of Ahmedgarh
Responding to a call given by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, residents of Muslim dominated areas in the region observed a ‘blackout’ for 15 minutes on Wednesday evening as a symbol of protest against the ‘discriminatory and unconstitutional’ Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
Though no formal announcement to support the protest was made by any of the non-Muslim outfits, the organisers claimed that all residents of their localities had switched off lights at their homes, offices, business establishments and vehicles from 9 to 9.15 pm on Wednesday to protest the recent amendments brought into the Waqf legislation.
Sajid Khan, a Muslim activist, said office-bearers and activists of various outfits, fighting for the withdrawal of recent amendments in the Waqf Act, had observed a complete blackout in their respective localities at Ahmedgarh and surrounding localities in the Malerkotla and Ludhiana districts.
“We stand indebted to our non-Muslim brethren who stood with us in solidarity and turned off lights during the symbolic protest against the Union Government,” said Suraaj Mohammad, former president of Municipal Council.
