A full-dress rehearsal for the 79th Independence Day took place at the PAU grounds on Wednesday.

Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain presided over the parade and hoisted the flag. He took a salute from the participating contingents of the march-past, comprising Punjab Police (men and women), Punjab Home Guards, NCC Scouts (boys and girls) and others, led by parade commander PPS Officer Harshpreet Singh.

The march-past was followed by a mass PT show by 850 students of 25 government schools and a patriotic colourful cultural programme, presented by students of different institutions, including Government High School (Dhandari), Spring Dale School, BVM School, DAV School and 16 others institutions.

Minutes after the full-dress rehearsal, the DC also held a meeting with officials of various departments in the stadium and took a look at the final touches required for the district-level Independence Day celebrations. He said Employment Generation, Skill Development and Training, New and Renewable Energy Resources, Governance Reforms and Grievance Redressal and Printing and Stationery Minister Aman Arora would preside over the event on Friday.

Jain emphasised the need for all departments concerned to exert sincere efforts to ensure that the I-Day celebrations were exceptional. He urged officials to diligently perform their duties, highlighting the importance of meticulous planning and execution.

Martyr to be remembered

A state-level function to commemorate the martyrdom day of Karnail Singh, the first Punjabi martyr of the Goa liberation movement, will be organised at his native village Issru, on August 15.

To take stock of the preparations of the event, Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain held a meeting with the officials of civil and police administration to ensure a smooth conduct of the state-level function. He stated that duties had been assigned to the officials concerned for making robust arrangements to make the event a success.

Jain added that Punjab New and Renewable Energy Sources, Printing and Stationery, Governance Reforms and Public Grievances and Employment Generation and Training Minister Aman Arora would pay floral tributes to the martyr on behalf of Punjab Government during this function. He said other dignitaries, including cabinet ministers and MLAs, would also pay their tributes to Martyr Master Karnail Singh.

Jain said proper arrangements would be ensured for the people visiting to participate in this state-level function. Khanna police have been directed to make elaborate security arrangements, besides ensuring proper arrangements for parking and smooth flow of traffic. The officials of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) had been asked to ensure uninterrupted power supply during this function.

Assistant Commissioner (UT) Pragati Rani, SDM Khanna Baljinder Singh Dhillon, Chairman Market Committee Khanna Jagtar Singh Gill Rattanheri were also present.
