She instructed the Health Department to conduct educational programmes through ASHA workers, Aam Aadmi Clinics and local health centres to inform the masses about symptoms, prevention and control of influenza A virus.
Civil Surgeon Pradeep Mahindra provided details on swine flu, a virus transmitted through airborne droplets. He outlined signs of the illness, which include high fever, persistent cough, sore throat, diarrhoea, vomiting and shortness of breath.
Dr Mahindra recommended measures to avoid contracting swine flu such as covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, frequent hand washing, staying away from crowded places, wearing masks and staying hydrated. He also pointed out that government hospitals offer free swine flu tests and medication.
This year, the unusual early arrival of H1N1 influenza cases has surprised the medical fraternity. Earlier, swine flu cases were detected during winters but this time, the flu has started spreading early.
