DMCH performs complex surgery on bladder cancer patient

Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana, has successfully performed a complex laparoscopic radical cystectomy on a 60-year-old male patient recently diagnosed with carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

The surgery was carried out by Dr Arvind Goyal, professor, Department of Urology, DMCH, marking a significant advancement in the hospital’s ongoing efforts to bring state-of-the-art cancer treatment to patients across the state and the region.

The patient, who was presented with high-grade infiltrating bladder cancer, underwent a thorough evaluation by Dr Goyal and his team before being considered for the procedure. Laparoscopic radical cystectomy, recognised as the gold standard in the management of advanced bladder tumours, was chosen as the most effective course of treatment. The surgery was executed with precision, ensuring complete removal of cancerous tissue while minimising trauma to surrounding organs. Post-surgery, the patient has shown stable recovery and encouraging signs for long-term disease control.

Dr Goyal also shared that laparoscopic radical cystectomy represents a major leap forward in the surgical management of bladder cancer. By combining enhanced visualisation, precision and minimally invasive techniques, the approach provides the same cancer-fighting effectiveness as traditional open surgery while offering tangible benefits in terms of recovery and outcomes.

Compared to the traditional open surgery, the method was associated with markedly reduced postoperative pain, blood loss and risk of infection while also shortening hospital stay and expediting recovery. Such benefits allow patients to regain normalcy and return to their daily lives much sooner, he added.
