Ganesh Chaturthi commenced today. Traditionally celebrated in a grand manner in Maharashtra, the festival has, of late, gained popularity among residents of Ludhiana.

Markets, especially those around temples, were tastefully decorated last night. Since early morning, devotees thronged shops to purchase idols of Lord Ganesha, which are taken home and worshipped for up to 10 days, depending on personal choice.

A large number of devotees preferred eco-friendly idols this year, which can easily dissolve in water during immersion. Young women and girls were seen enthusiastically buying Ganesha idols in Sarabha Nagar, Feroz Gandhi Market, Dandi Swami and in other parts of the city. Some families chose to keep their idols at the shops until the ‘muhurat’ (auspicious time) for installation.

Adding to the festive spirit, leading sweet shops in the city prepared a variety of ‘modaks’, the traditional sweet offered to Lord Ganesha. Huge idols were kept at temples for devotees to worship.
