Ludhiana, August 20

Ludhiana district today saw the highest spike of Covid cases so far with 398 people testing positive. Ten persons lost their lives to the virus while 19 are on ventilator support.

August has seen a big jump in the number of both infections and deaths due to Covid. First case of Covid was reported on March 24 and till July 31, the positive cases reported were 3,246. In August, the graph of positive cases rose to 7,686. In the 20 days of this month, the district has logged 4,440 positive cases.

First death in the district was reported on March 30 and till July 31, the number was 88. The 20 days of August have added 192 more deaths to the tally, taking it to 280.

Of the confirmed cases so far, 6,806 have been reported from Ludhiana city, 264 from Khanna, 259 from Jagraon, 150 from Payal, 113 from Raikot and 94 from Samrala.

Ludhiana city accounts for 250 deaths. Eight deaths each were reported from Jagraon and Khanna, six from Samrala, five from Payal and three from Raikot.

Today, 407 people were placed under home quarantine and 2,526 samples were collected in the district.

Of the 10 deceased, six had co-morbid conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. A 21-year-old man from Samrala Road was suffering from a kidney disease and a 36-year-old resident of New Kuldeep Nagar also had an acute kidney injury.

A 54-year-old man from Shastri Nagar, who was also suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome, died at Fortis. The other deceased belonged to Kabir Nagar, Azad Nagar, Abdullapur Basti, Tajpur Road, Preet Nagar, Rishi Nagar and Shivpuri and were in the age group of 40-60 years.

Of those testing positive, 107 were reported from flu corners, 97 were detected during contact tracing, 67 were reported from OPDs, 11 were healthcare workers, 10 were pregnant women, three were pre-operative cases, five were domestic/international travelers and five were policemen. Contact- tracing for 88 patients is in progress.
