Dr Rajesh Bagga, Civil Surgeon, said, the Health Department had been conducting Covid tests on all pregnant women visiting hospitals. “Even asymptomatic expectant mothers are being tested and hospitals have been directed not to refer any pregnant woman to other health centres for testing,” he said. “Since pregnant women are at a high risk of catching the virus, we have been conducting the Covid test on them during their visit for a regular check-up,” he said.

The Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society of India has issued guidelines for mother and childcare during Covid-19. Dr Venus Bansal, head of the gynaecology department, SPS Hospital, Ludhiana, said children and pregnant women were a special group and medical practitioners should be extra cautious while taking care of them. — TNS
