The 69th Punjab Inter-District School Games, being organised by the Punjab Education Department, began here on Monday. Competitions in five disciplines, namely handball (boys and girls U-19), taekwondo (boys and girls U-14), football (girls U-14 and 17), weightlifting (boys and girls U-17) and squash (all group) are being conducted at different venues across the district in which around 1,100 students are participating.

At the multipurpose indoor hall, Ludhiana, in taekwondo, in the boys section, Karanvir Singh (Patiala) came out triumphant in the below 21kg weight category. Jaswant Kumar of Ferozepur and Babban Kamboj of Fazilka secured the second and third positions, respectively.

In below 23kg group, the first three positions were bagged by Haragam Singh of Patiala, Ekam of Fazilka and Sahil Goyal of Ludhiana; while in below 25kg weight section, Parv Rajpur of Ludhiana emerged the winner, followed by Aryan Singh of Pathankot and Rohit Giri of Patiala at second and third places, respectively.

In football (girls), at Government School ground, Dakha, Bathinda beat Mohali 3-1, Patiala defeated Fatehgarh Sahib 9-0, Pathankot beat Barnala 2-0, Amritsar outplayed Kapurthala 7-0 and Ludhiana trounced Mansa 12-0.

At Government School ground, PAU, in handball, in the boys section, Barnala beat Mansa 14-11, Gurdaspur defeated Hoshiarpur 14-5, PIS Mohali outnumbered Tarn Taran 12-2, Patiala overwhelmed Fazilka 16-1, Jalandhar got the better of Bathinda 16-10, Sangrur prevailed over Ferozepur 14-13, Moga outclassed Fatehgarh Sahib 8-3 and Ludhiana beat Hoshiarpur 17-7.

In weightlifting competition at Naresh Chand Sports Stadium, Khanna, in the girls’ group, Khushi secured the top position in the below 40kg weight group. Chanchal Preet Kaur of Ropar finished as runner-up and Khushman of Mohali won third position, in the below 48kg weight category, Bindu of Barnala wing beat her opponents to fetch the top position, while Khushi of PIS Mohali and Simranjot Kaur of Gurdaspur finished as first and second runners-up, respectively.

In the below 53kg weight category, Sania of Mohali, Harsirat Kaur Gill of Ludhiana and Khushpreet Kaur of Ropar secured the top three positions, while in below 58kg weight section, Mandeep Kaur of Barnala outperformed her immediate opponents to secure the top spot. Sehajpreet Kaur of Ropar finished at second place and Jaspreet Kaur of Ludhiana secured the third position.
