An employee of the Irrigation Department is feared to have drowned while on duty in the Sirhind Canal on Friday afternoon. Divers were trying to trace the employee till the filing of the report.

The deceased has been identified as Harjinder Singh of Bilaspur village. He worked as a beldar in the Irrigation Department and had gone to the canal to remove weeds from the middle of the water body.

While working, the victim lost control and drowned in the canal water in no time.

The Station House Officer (SHO), Doraha, Akash Dutt, said the divers were finding it difficult to trace the victim due to high tide.
