Jaswinder Singh Bittu emerged victorious during a direct contest with his rival Rupinder Singh to become the sarpanch of Barundi village here on Sunday.

The post of sarpanch had fallen vacant due to the death of Harwinder Singh Giga, Bittu’s brother. Sukhdev Singh Walia, a Congress leader, said both the candidates contested the elections independently. Bittu secured 1,487 votes, while Rupinder Singh got 741.
