The assault, which culminated in a fatal shooting, occurred near Dr Hari Singh Hans Maternity Hospital.

The office of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in the Ludhiana district was also close to the spot. SSP Ludhiana Rural Ankur Gupta said that Tejpal Singh, a resident of Gidderwindi village, had reportedly arrived in Jagraon for routine personal work.

He was then cornered by a group of four unknown assailants. Before firing the fatal shots, the attackers brutally beat up the accused and his brother. SSP Gupta added that it was not a planned attack.

Assailants, including two brothers namely Kala and Honey from Rumi village, were also in Jagraon.

At around 3:30 pm, the duo along with their two friends were roaming in the city when they saw Tejpal and his brother. Initially, they started exchanging heated arguments, which then took a ghastly turn and eventually became a brutal fight.

The assailants then fired a shot that hit the victim in the chest and he died on the spot.

The accused then fled in their car.

SSP Gupta revealed that the police identified the four assailants who came in a white Swift car and a murder case was being registered against them.

They had an old enmity with Tejpal, as both parties had fought earlier. The status of the weapon, whether licensed or unlicensed, would be confirmed once the accused are arrested.
