Karamjeet Kaur, a student of BA-II and Gursimran Singh, a student of BA-I, hogged the spotlight when they were adjudged best athletes among girls and boys, respectively, at the 48th annual athletics meet of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, in this district on Saturday.

Gursimran proved his mettle by securing one title in addition to finishing second in two other events. He bagged top honours in 800m race, finished as runner-up in long jump and 1,500m race. Karamjeet proved too good for her immediate opponents as she emerged victorious in the 800m race. She also won second position in long jump and finished third in the 400m race.

Rajesh Malik, Director, Physical Education and Sports, Panjab University, Chandigarh, inaugurated the meet. Arjuna awardee Rupinder Singh Brar was the guest of honour on this occasion. Malik advised the students to take active part in sports of their choice since it was the healthy and energetic youth that India needed in order to march ahead. Brar said to achieve success at all levels, one should enter the sports arena as it taught the essential values of obedience, discipline, team spirit and above all an aptitude to face life with a positive mental frame of mind.

Principal Sarvjeet Brar thanked the guests and congratulated the position holders. Pavittarpal Singh, general secretary of the college managing committee, extended the vote of thanks.

Boys: 800m race - Gursimran Singh 1st, Ravi Parsad 2nd and Rajveer Singh 3rd; long jump - Daksh 1st, Gursimran Singh 2nd and Shubham Pal 3rd; 200m race - Amritpal Singh 1st, Gurmukh Singh 2nd and Shivam Kumar Pandey 3rd; javelin throw - Karamjeet Singh 1st, Mankaran Singh 2nd and Rajveer 3rd; shot put - Sharif Khan 1st, Harmandeep Singh 2nd and Mankaran Singh 3rd; 1,500m race - Ravi Parsad 1st, Gursimran Singh 2nd and Prince Rana 3rd; high jump - Shivam Kumar Pandey 1st, Gursehazbaaz Singh 2nd and Harjosh Singh 3rd.

Girls: 800m race - Karamjeet kaur 1st, Rajvir Kaur 2nd and Rooma 3rd; long jump- Krishma Patel 1st, Karamjeet Kaur 2nd and Rooma 3rd; 200m race - Riya 1st, Manmeet Kaur 2nd and Karamjeet Kaur 3rd; 400m race - Manmeet Kaur 1st, Krishma Patel 2nd and Karamjeet Kaur 3rd; shot put - Simranjot Kaur 1st, Navneet Kaur 2nd and Chahat 3rd; high jump - Manmeet Kaur 1st, Heena 2nd and Jaspreet Kaur 3rd; 1km walk- Muskan Bhatia 1st, Diya 2nd and Gurvir Kaur 3rd.
