Ludhiana DLSA initiates tree plantation drive

The District and Sessions Judge-cum-chairman of District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Harpreet Kaur Randhawa today initiated a tree plantation drive in Ludhiana district from local jail premises to combat climate change.

“Our planet is facing an environmental crisis. But there is a simple and effective solution to this — we can all contribute by planting trees. Every tree planted is a step towards a healthier, more sustainable future,” Randhawa said. “We need collective action to make a significant impact. It’s not just about planting trees, it’s about fostering a culture of environmental stewardship. We urge everyone to join us in this vital effort”, she added.

State Legal Services Authority member secretary Manjinder Singh said, “Trees play a vital role in our ecosystem, acting as natural air purifiers by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. They provide habitats for countless species, prevent soil erosion, and help regulate water cycles. Despite these benefits, forests worldwide are disappearing at an unprecedented pace due to logging, agriculture, and urban development. The industrial city Ludhiana needs more attention and care on environment issues”.

Divulging details about drive, DLSA secretary-cum-CJM Harvinder Singh said that the tree plantation drive in the district will be continued till September 30, 2024. District administration, forest department, NGOs have been roped in this drive to make it successful. This campaign is a crucial step in the right direction. Trees are essential to our environment, and with concerted effort, we can restore our forests and create a healthier planet for future generations.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Radhika Puri, Central Jail Deputy Superintendent Balvir Singh, Women Jail Superintendent Vijay Kumar and Borstal jail Superintendent Gurpreet Singh were also present on this occasion.
