Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora announced on Saturday that Ludhiana would soon see road infrastructure resembling that of European countries. Speaking at a press conference in the circuit house, Arora, accompanied by MLAs Ashok Parashar Pappi, Kulwant Singh Sidhu, Madan Lal Bagga and District AAP Urban President Sharanpal Singh Makkar, revealed plans for a major transformation of around 12.4 km of roads in the city.

The roads to be redeveloped include Old GT Road (from Sherpur Chowk to Jagraon Bridge) – 6.5 km, Chaura Bazaar (starting from the clock tower) – 1.75 km and Ghumar Mandi Road (from Fountain Chowk to Aarti Cinema) – 4.2 km. These roads would be redesigned as modern urban spaces, taking inspiration from Europe’s efficient road systems.

Arora stated the redesign would focus on addressing traffic congestion, standardising road widths, improving drainage to prevent damage and enhancing the aesthetics of the central verges with beautiful landscaping. The new infrastructure will also include streetlights, benches, cycle tracks, bus stops and pedestrian walkways.

He explained the agencies responsible for the development would maintain the roads for the next 10 years, ensuring long-term accountability and quality.

In the first phase of the project, the focus would be on designing the roads with the help of renowned urban planners and international experts. This phase would take approximately four months. In the second phase, construction would commence and is expected to be completed within eight months. The construction agencies would also take responsibility for ongoing maintenance and regular mechanised cleaning using advanced equipment.
