People in large numbers from a nearby residential area gathered at the scene but police personnel shooed them away as the former were creating hurdle in the operation of the firemen.

Three firemen also suffered minor injuries while dousing the flames.

A fireman, Rajan Kumar, who suffered minor burn injuries, said while controlling the fire, the blaze burnt his hair while his colleague Mandeep Singh suffered a knee injury as he fell down in the operation. Another fireman Karamvir Singh fainted inside the godown after inhaling smoke. All three were fine now.

Rajinder, another fireman, said the exact cause of the fire could not be ascertained.

Sources said 25 fire tenders were used to completely douse the flames. The firemen suspected that there were no fire safety arrangements inside the unit due to which the workers could not control the fire at the initial stage. Some fire extinguishers were used by the workers to douse the flames but to no avail. — TNS
